What is MRP (maximum retail price)?

MRP (maximum retail price) is the highest price a packaged good may be sold at to a customer in India. It includes tax, so the tax is taken out of it, not added on top.

Also called Maximum retail price, MRP inclusive of taxes · Restaurant and counter · Last reviewed 25 September 2026

Example

A ₹40 MRP bottle with 5% GST: the tax inside is 40 × 5 ÷ 105 = ₹1.90, and the value before tax is ₹38.10. The customer pays ₹40, not ₹40.01.

How Nivasik handles it

  • MRP is a ceiling on each line that the counter will not cross, for every login.
  • The tax is taken out of the price, so the bill is exactly the MRP.

What Nivasik does not do

  • It does not check that a printed MRP is correct: you enter it.
