Delivery app commission calculator: what an order really leaves you
A delivery app’s commission is a percentage of the order value before GST — 25% of a ₹1,000 order is ₹250, not 25% of the ₹1,050 the customer paid with 5% GST. The app’s fee carries GST of its own (₹45 at 18%), so ₹705 reaches the restaurant before its own costs.
Put in your own agreement’s rates: the calculator shows every deduction, and the app price that leaves you what the counter does.
Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere — no sign-up, no account, and the numbers never leave this device.
How the money on a delivery order splits
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| The customer pays | ₹1,050.00 |
| GST on the food at 5% — tax, collected for the Government | −₹50.00 |
| Order value before GST — the commission’s base | ₹1,000.00 |
| Commission at 25% | −₹250.00 |
| GST on the commission at 18% | −₹45.00 |
| Reaches the restaurant | ₹705.00 |
| Cost to make it (example) | −₹300.00 |
| Left after cost | ₹405.00 |
The ₹50 of GST on the food is tax, whoever collects it, so it is not part of the base the commission is taken on. The app’s own fee is a service to the restaurant and carries GST of its own. What is left — here ₹705 of the ₹1,000 — is what the order earned before the kitchen’s costs.
The ₹12.50 that goes missing in the books
It is usually a restaurant’s own books that get the base wrong. Take 25% of the bill with GST — ₹262.50 instead of ₹250 — and every commission expense is overstated by the commission on the tax: ₹12.50 on this order, ₹500 a day on 40 orders like it. Nivasik made this mistake itself and fixed it: the commission is now taken on the value before tax, and that base is stored on the order so the weekly payout can be checked against it. Check which figure your own agreement names.
Pricing for the app
If 25% commission plus 18% GST on it means 70.5% of the price reaches you, the same ₹800 you keep at the counter needs an app price of ₹1,134.75 — 41.8% more. Many restaurants mark their app menu up for exactly this reason. Open “Compare with your own counter” above, and the calculator works out the price for your own rates, to the paisa, after rounding.
What it leaves out
This calculator leaves out
- It does not know your agreement. Whether a discount you fund is taken before or after the commission, and what a payment fee is charged on, are set there — enter the price after any discount you fund, and fees in rupees.
- It leaves out the income tax the app deducts at source, which is credited against your own tax rather than lost — the Swiggy and Zomato commission guide works it through, with its official sources.
- It does not know any platform’s rates. Commission is agreed restaurant by restaurant.
Delivery orders on the same books as the counter
- Swiggy and Zomato orders punched in at the counter, into the same kitchen screen and stock as dine-in and takeaway.
- The app’s commission booked as a cost, on the value before tax, with a payout register to check each weekly transfer against.
- Per dish: what it costs to make, what it earns at the counter, and what is left after the app’s cut.
What it does not do
- Orders do not arrive by themselves: they are read off the app’s own tablet and punched in, because the order feeds are only for approved POS vendors.
The POS is ₹1,499 per outlet a month and free for 45 days to try.
Questions people ask
Should delivery commission be worked out on the amount with GST or without?
Without. GST is tax collected for the Government, so a percentage-of-sales commission is worked out on the value before GST — 25% of ₹1,000, not of ₹1,050. Your agreement defines the base; check which figure it names.
How much does a restaurant keep from a ₹500 order?
At a 25% commission with 18% GST on it, ₹352.50 before its own costs: ₹500 − ₹125 − ₹22.50.
What price should I list on the app?
Enough that what reaches you matches what you keep at the counter: divide the counter price by the share that reaches you. With 25% commission and 18% GST on it, 70.5% reaches you, so ₹800 at the counter needs ₹1,134.75 on the app.
Is the GST on the commission a cost?
It is charged on the app’s invoice to you. Whether you can claim it back as input tax credit depends on how you are registered — ask your accountant. If you can, set that field to 0.
Does the calculator know Swiggy’s or Zomato’s rates?
No. Commission is agreed restaurant by restaurant. Enter the rate from your own agreement; 25% is only an example.
