The common statuses
| Status | Meaning |

| Dirty (VD / OD) | Needs cleaning — after a check-out (vacant dirty) or a stay-over (occupied dirty). |
| Clean (VC / OC) | Cleaned. A vacant clean room can be sold. |
| Inspected | Checked by a supervisor after cleaning — the surest room to give an arriving guest. |
| Out of order (OOO) | Broken, and cannot be sold until maintenance fixes it. |
| Out of service (OOS) | Deliberately closed — renovation, an off-season wing — not broken. |
The usual cycle is check-out → dirty → clean → inspected → sold. Out of order and out of service are kept apart because they mean different things for the numbers: a broken room is a maintenance problem, while a wing closed for the season was never meant to be sold.
Example
The 7 am board for a 12-room property: 5 occupied, 2 departing today, 3 vacant clean, 1 vacant dirty, 1 out of order (the AC compressor). The desk can sell three rooms now, and up to three more once the dirty room and the two departures are cleaned.
